John Lennon (/d͡ʒɒn ˈlɛnən/), né le 9 octobre 1940 à Liverpool et mort assassiné le 8 décembre 1980 à New York, est un auteur-compositeur-interprète, guitariste, multi-instrumentiste, écrivain et militant pacifiste britannique.

Il est le fondateur des Beatles, groupe musical anglais au succès planétaire dans lequel il forme, avec Paul McCartney, l'un des tandems d'auteurs-compositeurs les plus influents et prolifiques de l'histoire du rock, ayant écrit plus de deux cents chansons.

Adolescent, influencé par ses idoles américaines du rock 'n' roll, il est porté par la vague de musique skiffle à Liverpool et fonde en 1957 le groupe The Quarrymen qui deviendra les Beatles après avoir recruté Paul McCartney et George Harrison, rejoints en 1962 par Ringo Starr. Des albums Please Please Me en 1963 à Let It Be en 1970, les Beatles deviennent un phénomène de l'histoire de l'industrie discographique, introduisant innovations musicales, mélangeant les genres et les influences avec une audace et une sophistication inédites. John Lennon occupe une place centrale dans cette réussite populaire, critique et commerciale. Des dissensions mettent fin aux Beatles en 1970.

Accompagné depuis 1968 de son épouse Yoko Ono, artiste japonaise d'avant-garde, John Lennon entame une carrière solo et en duo. Ils deviennent des artistes engagés parmi les plus médiatisés, aussi bien pour leur art que pour leur engagement politique. Ils créent le Plastic Ono Band, groupe variable où interviennent des amis sur scène ou en studio. En 1971, John Lennon compose une chanson emblématique, Imagine ; l'album du même nom est son plus grand succès commercial en solo. Lennon se retire en 1975 de toute activité publique pour s'occuper de son fils Sean, puis revient à la musique en 1980, mais est assassiné devant sa résidence du Dakota Building à New York par Mark David Chapman, atteint de troubles psychotiques.

Outre sa musique, Lennon est célèbre pour ses prises de position pacifistes, à la fin des années 1960. Ses activités et son engagement, notamment contre la guerre du Viêt Nam, lui valent des ennuis avec le gouvernement des États-Unis, qui tente de l'expulser. Personnalité complexe, d'un humour acerbe, teinté d'absurde et de non-sens, il connaît d'abord une époque conflictuelle voire violente, puis change avec le succès. Il pratique la peinture et l'écriture, joue dans quelques films, et réalise des courts métrages expérimentaux.

Longtemps après sa mort, il reste l'un des artistes les plus populaires du XX^e siècle. Il s'est vendu plus de 72 millions de ses disques en « équivalent album ». Il incarne le mouvement pacifiste peace and love des années 1960 et 1970. Un rassemblement commémoratif a lieu à New York chaque 8 décembre, jour de sa mort, et plusieurs monuments ont été érigés de par le monde. L'aéroport de Liverpool porte son nom depuis 2002.

Yoko Ono (Japanese: 小野 洋子, romanized: Ono Yōko, usually spelled in katakana as オノ・ヨーコ; born February 18, 1933) is a Japanese artist, musician, activist, and filmmaker. Her work also encompasses performance art and filmmaking.

Ono grew up in Tokyo and moved to New York City in 1952 to join her family. She became involved with New York City's downtown artists scene in the early 1960s, which included the Fluxus group, and became widely known outside the contemporary art world in 1969 when she married English musician John Lennon of the Beatles, with whom she would subsequently record as a duo in the Plastic Ono Band. The couple used their honeymoon as a stage for public protests against the Vietnam War with what they called a bed-in. She and Lennon remained married until he was murdered in front of the couple's apartment building, The Dakota, on December 8, 1980. Together, they had one son, Sean, who later also became a musician.

Ono began a career in popular music in 1969, forming the Plastic Ono Band with Lennon and producing a number of avant-garde music albums in the 1970s. She achieved commercial and critical success in 1980 with the chart-topping album Double Fantasy, a collaboration with Lennon that was released three weeks before his murder, winning the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. To date, she has had twelve number one singles on the US Dance charts, and in 2016 was named the 11th most successful dance club artist of all time by Billboard magazine. Many musicians have paid tribute to Ono as an artist in her own right and as a muse and icon, including Elvis Costello who recorded his version of "Walking on Thin Ice" with the Attractions for the Every Man Has a Woman tribute album to Yoko Ono, the B-52's, Sonic Youth and Meredith Monk.

As Lennon's widow, Ono works to preserve his legacy. She funded the Strawberry Fields memorial in Manhattan's Central Park, the Imagine Peace Tower in Iceland, and the John Lennon Museum in Saitama, Japan (which closed in 2010). She has made significant philanthropic contributions to the arts, peace and disaster relief in Japan and the Philippines, and other such causes. In 2002, she inaugurated a biennial $50,000 LennonOno Grant for Peace. In 2012, she received the Dr. Rainer Hildebrandt Human Rights Award and co-founded the group Artists Against Fracking.
